Determination of the relationship between self-control skills, perceived parental attitude and social exclusion in adolescents

Purpose: To determine the relationship between self-control skills, perceived parental attitudes and social exclusion in adolescents. Material and Method: The research was conducted as a descriptive and cross-sectional relationship-seeking type. The research was conducted between March 2024 and June 2025 in 3 high schools in the provincial center of Ağrı. The universe of the study consisted of students from 24 high schools in the provincial center of Ağrı, and 430 high school students selected from 3 high schools using simple random sampling method constituted the research sample. The research was completed with 400 students. Research data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Parental Attitude Scale, Adolescent Self-Regulation Skills Scale, and Ostracism for Adolescents. In the data analysis, descriptive analyses, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and in cases where group variances were not homogeneous, Welch ANOVA, Pearson correlation and regression analysis were used in the SPSS package program. The significance level of p<0.05 (95% confidence interval) was used in the analyses. Findings: In the study, the mean score of the adolescents in the Parental Attitude Scale's "Acceptance/Care" sub-dimension was determined as 17.10±4.11, the mean score in the "Psychological Autonomy" sub-dimension was determined as 19.93±4.19, the mean score in the "Control" sub-dimension was determined as 25.52±5.20, the mean score in the "Self-Control Success" sub-dimension of the Self-Control Skills Scale was determined as 48.48±8.59, the mean score in the "Self-Control Failure" sub-dimension was determined as 32.48±6.62, the mean score in the "Disregard" sub-dimension of the Ostracism Scale was determined as 8.65±4.12, the mean score in the "Exclusion" sub-dimension was determined as 20.37±5.78 and the total score mean of the scale was determined as 29.03±5.31. Conclusion: As adolescents' perceived parental attitudes of "acceptance/involvement" increase, their self-regulatory success decreases and social exclusion increases. As adolescents' perceived parental attitudes of "psychological autonomy" increase, their self-regulatory success increases. As adolescents' perceived self-regulatory success increases, their social exclusion decreases. Keywords: Parental Attitudes, Adolescent, Self-Control, Social Exclusion.
