Abstract (EN)

Resimli Ay magazine was founded in 1924 by Mehmed Zekeriya and Sabiha Sertel and was actively published between 1924 and 1931 as a publication reflecting the cultural, social, and literary aspects of the period. In November 1928, it took a three-month hiatus due to the adoption of the new alphabet, resuming publication in March 1929. During this period, with the significant contributions of Nâzım Hikmet, the magazine placed greater emphasis on social issues. In January 1931, it halted publication for an extended period, later resuming in March 1936, only to be completely shut down in December 1938. Political pressures and economic constraints played a significant role in its closure. The magazine covered a wide range of topics, including fashion, beauty, entertainment, literature, and social issues. Its contribution to the modernization process of the Republic cannot be overlooked. Articles discussing beauty perceptions based on fashion, health, and the female body gained fame by addressing the Westernization movement of the era and women's position in society. Women's rights, clothing reforms, and the fashion trends that metaphorically "danced" upon them were among the topics that attracted significant attention. The themes of society and entertainment provide insight into how the people of various cities—such as Istanbul, Konya, Trabzon, Kastamonu, and Izmir—engaged in leisure activities. The themes of theft and storytelling focused on social injustice, allowing a perspective on women's delicate emotions and societal shortcomings. Other themes such as camping, family, affection, gender equality, and facial representations reflected the lifestyle and interests of the society through the magazine's articles. Unlike many magazines of the era that catered to a specific audience and maintained societal divisions, Resimli Ay distinguished itself by appealing to a broad readership with content that touched on everyday life without excluding any societal group. Thus, it became an important source reflecting social and cultural transformations of the period. This thesis focuses primarily on women's fashion and societal entertainment. Additionally, translations of selected articles from Resimli Ay magazine related to family, affection, dance, beauty, storytelling, theft, gender equality, camping, health, and facial representations are provided, along with analyses of these themes. The objective is to present a fresh perspective on the social life of the era and the evolving internal and external world of the people.
