Abstract (EN)
Al-Muhsin bin Muhammad bin Karama, known as Abu Saad, and commonly recognized as Al-Hakim Al-Jushami, was a distinguished scholar of the Mu'tazila school of thought in the 5th century AH. His books significantly shaped the Mu'tazilite doctrine, and he is notable for chronicling its key figures. Among his books, his magnum opus, Al-Tahzibb fi Al-Tafsir, stands out. It is an extensive Quranic interpretation encyclopedia in ten volumes, covering issues related to the science of tafsir (Quran interpretation). He devoted special consideration to the subject of Qur'anic readings. His approach to interpreting Quranic verses involved an initial explanation of their varied readings, focusing on the semantic and grammatical nuances and implications each reading presents. In doing so, he frequently referenced linguists and grammarians to support his direction of such implications. No previous study has specifically focused on the nuances of Quranic readings, particularly in terms of their semantic and syntactic implications. Therefore, this study explores the grammatical guidance of mutawater (recurrent) Quranic readings in Al-Tahzib fi Al-Tafsir. This research is confined to the mutawater readings as they are the only ones that fulfill all the criteria for acceptance. Its primary goal is to elucidate Al-Hakim Al-Jushami's stance on the critique and selection of Quranic readings, as well as his methodology for deducing their implications. Additionally, the study intends to highlight Al-Hakim's views and choices through an analytical survey, comparing them with the principal works on grammatical implications of Quranic reading before and after Al-Hakim's era. The study is organized into a preface, five chapters, and a conclusion. The preface focuses on the significance of the research, elucidates the reasons for its selection, and outlines the methodologies employed. Chapter One, serving as an introductory chapter, presents a detailed profile of Al-Hakim Al-Jushami, with a short bibliography of his major works, with a special emphasis on Al-Tahzib fi Al-Tafsir. It provides a comprehensive overview of Al-Hakim's methodologies and the structural plan of his book. Chapter Two deals with the realm of Quranic readings, their definition, various types, and the criteria they must meet. It introduces the ten narrators of the Quranic readings and their disciples. It also examines the critiques of the Quranic readings and Al-Hakim's perspectives towards them. The chapter then transitions to explore the guidance of syntactic implications of the Quranic readings, tracing its origins and identifying its primary sources. Additionally, it discusses the general distinctive features of Al-Hakim's analysis regarding the implications of Quranic readings. The study progresses to the practical chapters, which are the final three chapters, each focusing on a specific applied topic. Chapter Three analyzes examples of the grammatical guidance in the mutawater readings in nouns. Chapter Four shifts focus to examples in verbs. Finally, the concluding practical chapter delves into particles and letters. The study ultimately concluded with several findings. It reveals that Al-Hakim's theoretical and practical approaches toward the critiques and preferences of Quranic readings diverge. While theoretically opposed to criticizing and showing preference for certain readings, Al-Hakim, in practice, did engage in preferring some readings over others and occasionally engaged in critiques of some. Furthermore, the study discerns that Al-Hakim's work in the area of reading guidance primarily involved the refinement and selection from the existing statements of grammarians and linguists. His deviations from the established perspectives of his predecessors were minimal and selectively identified by the researcher. The study concludes with a recommendation for future researchers to pay greater attention to Al-Tahzib fi Al-Tafsir, particularly in the context of linguistic studies.
