Examination of early maladaptive schemas regarding beliefs in relationships and impact of cognitive distortions on marital adjustment in married adults

Abstract (EN)
This study investigated the relationship between married individuals' early maladaptive schemas, their beliefs about the relationship and their cognitive distortion with marital adjustment. The research sample of living in various regions of Turkey, consists of a total of 457 married individuals, including 270 women 187 men participating as a volunteer. Personal Information Form, Young Schema Scale-Short Form 3, Marital Adjustment Scale, Cognitive Distortions Scale and Belief Inventory in Relationships were used as data collection tools in the study. SPSS-22 program was used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that the marital adjustment of married individuals significantly differentiated according to their monthly income, duration of marriage, number of children and marriage style. It was concluded that the marital adjustment of married individuals did not significantly differ according to their gender, education status, occupation variable, location variable, age of marriage, and family type. As a result of the analysis, a negative and significant relationship was found between marital adjustment and early maladaptive schemas and these schema dimensions in married individuals. A significant relationship could not be found only between marital adjustment and high standards dimension. A negative and significant relationship was found between marital adjustment and beliefs about the relationship and the helplessness dimension of these beliefs. No significant relationship was found between marital adjustment and cognitive distortions mind-reading dimension. A significant negative correlation was found between marital adjustment and other sub-dimensions of cognitive distortions. As a result of the analysis, the independent variables of the research predict marital adjustment as a whole.
