Examining silence and gender themes in feminist Bildungsromane in the light of écriture feminine: Clarice Lispector's Near To The Wild Heart and Angela Carter's The Magic Toyshop

This thesis investigates the intertwined relationship between silence and gender in Clarice Lispector's Near to the Wild Heart (1943) and Angela Carter's The Magic Toyshop (1967) within the framework of écriture féminine. By employing the theoretical perspectives of Hélène Cixous, Julia Kristeva, and Luce Irigaray, the study explores how both writers subvert patriarchal discourse by transforming silence—a concept historically associated with female oppression—into a site of expression, resistance, and self-construction. The analysis demonstrates that Lispector and Carter, through their protagonists Joana and Melanie, reformulate the traditional bildungsroman structure, turning it into a feminist bildungsroman that privileges interiority, fragmentation, and the body over linear social integration. Silence, in their novels, becomes a linguistic and bodily practice through which the female self articulates identity beyond the symbolic order. Drawing on Cixous' concept of body-writing, Kristeva's semiotic chora, and Irigaray's mimicry, the thesis argues that both writers employ silence not as a lack of speech but as a generative form of feminine language. Through close textual readings, this research reveals that silence functions as a mode of writing that inscribes resistance and autonomy into the female experience. Lispector's introspective prose and Carter's myth-reversing narratives illustrate how écriture féminine dismantles masculine language and redefines the parameters of voice, identity, and authorship. Ultimately, this study concludes that silence—when reframed through écriture féminine—becomes a radical feminist strategy that challenges patriarchal norms and opens new possibilities for expressing female subjectivity within modernist and postmodernist traditions.
