Abstract (EN)
The basis of this research is the factors affecting the adaptation of white-collar employees in the banking sector in Türkiye during the widespread transition from traditional work arrangements to remote work due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The conceptual and theoretical approach of this study is based on Blauner's concept of alienation, feminist theory, and symbolic interactionism, which together provide a consolidated understanding of the remote work phenomenon within the Covid-19 pandemic context from the perspective of white-collar remote workers employed in the banking sector in Türkiye. The data collection process followed an explanatory sequential mixed methods research design, starting with quantitative data collection process with the participation of 152 white-collar employees working remotely in Turkish banks and then continuing with the qualitative data collection with 11 participants. Of the 152 participants, 91 were female and 61 were male. Among the 11 participants in the qualitative data collection process, there were eight females and three males. Findings pointed out that despite difficulties, participants generally found remote work satisfactory, valuing its advantages and trying to develop coping mechanisms and strategies for the disadvantages. Household dynamics, loss of autonomy on the work, and communication patterns with the colleagues and senior managers were identified as influential factors in the adaptation process. In addition, it has been concluded through the research findings that changes in physical health, eating habits and sleeping patterns, and difficulty in coping with stress are among the factors affecting adaptation. Participants appreciated reduced commute time, flexible workspace arrangement, increased family time, and comfort in remote work. However, challenges included blurring work-life boundaries, distractions, health issues, and irregular working hours. Remote work may become more common in the future due to changing social order and work dynamics. It is crucial to understand the factors affecting adaptation to remote working and to develop mechanisms for these factors.
