Investigating of crime news in dijital newspapers in the context of Foucault's concepts of power and fear construction

Foucault thinks that the question of power is generally discussed in the context of state power, economy or the domination of a bourgeoisie, but it should be examined in much broader and different contexts. According to him, power operates through various discourses and these discourses affect different power relations in society differently. It is tried to make people adopt how they should behave through various discourses. One of these discourses is that the crime news in the newspapers is made with the aim of making people think that they are constantly in danger. The goal here is to arouse fear and make people think that the state's security forces are necessary. The aim of this study is to examine the criminal news in digital newspapers in Turkey and the reader comments on the news based on Foucault's concepts of power and fear construction. Other aims of the study; it is a test of how criminal news affects power relations in society, people's reactions to these news, people's approaches to state interventions on people, and Foucault's theory of power in general. While these are being done; first of all, Foucault's theories of knowledge and power, and then the technologies of power that Foucault says exist in Western societies are examined. Finally; the news of the four selected criminals were examined through the digital newspapers Birgün, Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, Milli Gazete and Yeniçağ. Discourse analysis method was used in the study. While analyzing the discourse, the ideologies of the newspapers were not taken into consideration and the purpose of the news was not questioned. Instead of; It has been investigated whether the news has the potential to create fear on people, how people react to the news, and how the news affects or can affect power relations in society. Much of the news has been shown to have the potential to arouse fear in people and to feed the idea that security forces should protect people from criminals. It has also been determined that some of the news has the potential to lead to the thought that the security forces are insufficient in protecting people from criminals and to undermine the legitimacy of the security forces.
