INVESTIGATION OF PRODUCTION PARAMETERS OF GASATOMISED TIN POWDERS(M.Sc. Thesis)Serdar KÜÇÜKARSLANGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYNovember 2006ABSTRACTIn this study, the effects of production parameters on gas atomised tin powderproperties have been investigated experimentally. First, incompleted parts of thenozzle and the melting system in Gazi Gas Atomisation Unit have been supplied.During this investigation, close-coupled Mannesmann type of nozzle has been used. The melting tundish and some connection elements have been designed andmanufactured. So, the atomisation unit has been completed. Air has been used as theatomisation gas and tin has been atomised by heating up to 400 ºC and by using thedifferent protrusion lengths under the different pressures. Particle size anddistribution have been measured by laser scattering instrument. Powder shape andsurface structure have been examined by using scanning electron microscope. Thefinest powders have been produced under 10 bars pressure by using the melt deliverytube with 3 mm diameter and 8 mm protrusion apparatus and mean powder size hasbeen measured as 68,50 µm. Powders have generally irregular shapes and powderssmaller than 10 µm have spherical shape and smooth surface. Powders coarser than100 µm have ligamental shape and cellular surface shape.Science Code: 914.1.092Key Words : Gas atomization, nozzle geometry, gas pressure, protrusionlengthPage Number : 103Advisers : Assoc.
