Investigation of the effect of rutile, basic and metal cored wires used in MAG welding on the weld metal properties

Abstract (EN)

In this study, by the method of gas metal arc (MAG) welding, the effect of rutile, basic and metal cored wires on the weld material properties has been investigated. MAG welding, due to the adventages it has got, has gradually been increasing the rate of use in industry. One of the key points in MAG welding is the selection of electrode wire. In this method, the composition of weld wire which comes out as a result of the electrode wire and protective gas combination should meet the mechanical and physicial requirements. In this study, the effect of electrode type on weld seam properties has been investigated. In the experiments, St 37 low carbon structural steel as the ?base material?, (%75-80 Ar + CO2) as the ?protective gas?, rutile, basic and metal cored wires with various characteristics as the ?add material? have been used. In order to determine the effects of using different ?add material? on weld seam mechanical properties, tensile and hardness tests have been performed and then the microscopic investigations have been performed. As a result of the experimental studies, it has been determined that the holes in the core of the wire has caused pores in the weld seam, and the hardest weld seam has been formed with ?basic?. Moreover, it has also been observed that the weld seam done by rutile flux cored is the most ductile and is has the closest ductility of the base material.
