Abstract (EN)

Profile determining researches provide to describe the current situation of the target group, who forms the study, in terms of several variables. Studies for student profile are important for the determination of the students? socio-economic background, academic and social life at university and for their future expectations. It can be said that these studies move guiding properties for academics both to their trainings and to their scientific studies.The main aim of this research is to reveal a profile related to the students of Gazi University, Gazi Faculty of Education, Department of Secondary Education Science and Mathematics Teaching Chemistry Teaching Programme and also to determine their hopelessness levels. Also in the study, some factors like parents? educational status, incomes, geographical regions their families live, the number of siblings, the number of siblings getting education and its impact on students' academic achievement will be investigated.The study was done with 182 students who enrolled Gazi University, Gazi Faculty of Education, Secondary Science and Mathematics Education Department of Chemistry Teaching Program between the years 2004-2008 and who are actively continuing education. In the research, designed based on descriptive screening model, the data for determining profile was taken from student affairs information system and the data for determining the level of hopelessness was collected with Beck Hopelessness Scale. The data gathered from the research was evaluated on SPSS computer program using descriptive statistics, ? 2 (Ki kare ) analysis and results are presented in the form of tables % and firmness.According to the findings from the study, more than %50 of students? families live in the Central Anatolia Region and 67.58 % of the students? family income is below 1000 TL. Most of the students have one (42 % ) or two (23 %) siblings and also the vast majority of their number of siblings studying is : one . In the study, it is determined that hopelessness level of students is low; however, % 65 of them is worried about the future.Key Words : Chemistry Teaching, Student profile , academic success , hopelessness level.
