Gaziantep Kendirli Church and Latin School protection issues and restoration proposals

The varying reflection via architectural culture from one structure to the building groups of monumental artifacts identified the urban form, the traces left by different cultures influenced the structure. Especially, there are architectural, historical and cultural messages that monumental structures will convey around and into the future. They reflect the construction technique, material usage and preferences of the constructed period. It is the physical and permanent indicator of the architecture, social, and economic life which are the intersection of technique and the public building culture. At the same time, they reveal the reasons for the construction and the testimonies at the environment placed from the beginning without any comment. Kendirli Church (Terra Santa) and the Latin (Saint Joseph) School located in Gaziantep, hosted many cultures and civilizations in Anatolia since the prehistoric times, is also a cultural heritage, necessary to be protected, that preserves the characteristics of the constructed period and the social events lived in the environment surrounded, a thesis study titled Gaziantep Kendirli Church And Latin School Protection Issues and Restoration Proposals evaluated by compiling the necessary data in order for the sustainable protection proposal of this cultural existence, is prepared. In the first chapter of the study, the literature summary, purpose and scope of the thesis are stated. In the second chapter, by investigating the physical, social structure, and historical development of Gaziantep, the facts that prepared the church's building environment in the direction of these data are searched. In the third chapter, the features of church architecture, the rules about church construction in Ottoman and the Gaziantep churches in order to form a base for comparative study were examined. As for the fourth chapter, the present situation of Kendirli Church and Latin School is documented; architectural features, spatial program and construction technique are defined, during the historical development process the relationship between location and environment is examined, and restitution study is done as a result of these analyzes. In the fifth section, a restoration proposal is prepared in the direction of the obtained data, and it is terminated by transferring the conclusion and evaluations of the study.
