Effects of beta carotene and selenium application on pregnancy and hematological values in non-pregnant cattle

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the effects of single dose β carotene and selenium administered intramuscularly to 3-6 year old cattle that did not become pregnant despite 4 or more artificial insemination or using bulls on pregnancy rate in cattle were investigated. For the purpose of the research, 80 Holstein cattle aged 3-6 years that did not become pregnant were divided into four groups. Synchronization program was applied to the cattle in the control group for artificial insemination. Sodium Selenite 1 mg/100 kg was applied to the cattle in group 1. Beta carotene 1 mg/kg was applied to the cattle in group 2. Sodium Selenite 1 mg/100 kg and beta carotene 1 mg/1 kg were applied to the cattle in group 3. Synchronization program was applied to all 4 groups for artificial insemination on the same day. Pregnancy examination was performed on the cattle on the 35th day of artificial insemination. Blood samples were taken into anticoagulant and gel tubes on the first, 20th and 35th days of application in each group. Blood samples taken in anticoagulant tubes were examined for hemogram results. Blood taken in gel tubes was centrifuged in the laboratory and serum samples were taken. Selenium and vitamin E levels in the serum were examined. Chi-Square Test was used to evaluate whether there was a statistically significant difference in terms of pregnancy rates between the groups. Statistical analysis was performed based on the observed pregnancy rates obtained from each group and the significance level was determined as 0.05. It is important to investigate the effect of selenium on reproduction with further studies.
