Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT The aim of that study was to investigate relation between the fear of childbirth and cognitive factors like distress intolerance and discomfort intolerance. Data collected from 103 pregnant women who admitted to Adıyaman Training and Research Hospital Gynecology Outpatient Clinic between December 2017 and June 2018 for antenatal follow-up. Fear of childbirth was measured with "Wijma-A Birth Expectation / Experience Scale"; distress intolerance was measured with "Resistance to Distress Scale (SDS)"; discomfort intolerance was measured with, "Resistance to Resistivity Scale". When the level of distress intolerance was decreased, (r=-0,382; p<0.05). Likewise when the level of discomfort intolerance was decreased, the fear of childbirth was increased (r=-0,237; p<0.05); otherwise when the level of avoidance from discomfort was decreased the fear of childbirth was increased (r=-0,249; p<0.05). Also it was found that parity had a mediator effect on distress intolerance and discomfort intolerance. 23.3% (n = 24) of the pregnant women had the fear of childbirth at the clinical level. There was a significant relationship between the "childbirth fear" scores and education level (F = 3,313; p <0.05), form of marriage (t = 2,567; p <0.05), method of parturition (t = -4,020; p> 0.05), support during pregnancy (t = -2.006; p <0.05). Keywords: Fear of Childbirth, Distress Intolerance, Discomfort Intolerance, Parity.
