Abstract (EN)
This study aims to propose a theoretical and methodological framework for identifying sounds with acoustic heritage value from the past to the present, and to apply this framework to Atpazarı Square, one of the historically and culturally significant urban centers of Ankara. The proposed two-stage approach was developed through a comprehensive literature review and analysis of existing methods. In the first stage, historical sounds from the 13th to 20th centuries were examined through written and visual documents, oral history sources, and cultural memory studies, and analyzed using Peirce's semiotic theory. These findings were then interpreted through the components of Schafer's soundscape approach. In the second stage, the current sound environment of Atpazarı Square was investigated through systematic field observations and semistructured questionnaires. The findings reveal that Atpazarı Square once had a rich auditory identity shaped by commerce, craftsmanship, and social interaction, but this identity has significantly transformed due to urban redevelopment processes. The study demonstrates that a comprehensive methodological approach combining semiotic analysis, soundscape theory, field observations, and user experience-based surveys offers a practical tool for identifying acoustic heritage.
