Abstract (EN)

The main purpose of "African Glass Beads from Past to Present" research is; to study the production methods of glass beads, the tools and their equivalents in modern time that are used in production, and the countries in Africa that the production and the usage of glass beads is common. Moreover, it is aimed to enlighten the history of glass beads. Through the lack of knowledge of African glass beads in Turkey, the study also aims to build up a rich resource about this topic. The article is composed of five sections of theoretical explanations and personal applications. The methods and resources used in this article are internet, ast, articles and multifarious different resources. The information taken from the resources has been gathered and been made even richer with a variety of visuals. In the first section of the article; the definition and the first sight of glass beads, and secondly the historical progress of African glass beads is addressed. Various antique glass bead types and their formation has been studied and with the samples obtained a range of products introduced. In the second section of the article; the tools that has been used in the production of beads in Africa in asta reexamined and been explained under sub-sections with visuals included. In the third section, various production methods and their modern equivalents are examined. It is seen that there are five different methods and the first method ever also has a variety of different techniques in practice. African glass bead samples that has been made by using different methods are addressed in separate sub headings. Additionally, the African glass beads that are still actively produced are studied and details given about modern African glass bead industry. The fourth section of the article is devoted for personal applications. In this section, new glass beads are produced with the influence of African glass bead and these beads are reinterpreted with modern design. In the fifth and the conclusion section, comments and explications are made about the place of African glass beads in the past and the present cultures.
