Re-functioning in traditional maras houses: Example of kocabas mansion

Prof. Dr. Aydanur YENEL January 2021 192 pages Protection culture and conservation awareness are among the most important factors in keeping the urban fabric and cultural memory alive. Functional transformations, which are designed to protect historical buildings, are considered an important activity both in meeting the spatial needs and in transferring the urban texture to future generations. Especially the social changes in family structure and social values caused the historical buildings to lose their functions in the city. In this direction, the re-functionalization of hosts that have lost their functionality to meet spatial needs can be considered as an alternative building production process. The transformation of idle structures with re-functioning is of great importance in order for historical buildings with architectural value, shedding light from the past to the present, including human, social and environmental values, without harming future generations, and especially in order to keep the cultural urban memory alive. Within the scope of thesis work; architectural heritage, reuse theories, examples of structures that have changed their function are examined. The factors affecting the characteristic structure of the traditional Turkish house are discussed within historical and geographical variables. Then, in the light of the information obtained from the literature, the subject of re-functioning was mentioned and the thematic Kitchen Museum, Deligönüller Mansion, Köker Mansion, Mahmut Arifi Mansion were tried to be transferred in the universe of traditional Maraş housing architecture. In this context, the architectural features of the mansions and the reasons for being idle; are other issues explored in terms of discussion of usage transformation possibilities. In addition to all these, after the re-functioning of Kocabaş Mansion, an interview form with 18 questions was developed and applied to 40 participants in order to measure its effect on visitors as of its location. The obtained data were analyzed descriptively. Based on the findings, new solution possibilities were created in order to contribute to the points considered as deficient in the adaptive reuse phase of Kocabaş Mansion.
