Abstract (EN)
This work aims at exploring the 1994 Rwandan genocide and its multidimensional consequences on both national and international levels. Within a period of 100 days between April and July, nearly one million Tutsi and Hutu have been systematically massacred in front of the international community by government and army forces supported by local militias. While this tragedy ruined the country in all aspects, it also led to a serious criticism with regard to the lack of action and decisiveness on the part of the international community in the face of crimes against humanity like genocide. UN Security Council?s indifferent attitude either before or during the genocide which has largely been shaped by US? anti-interventionist policy has been subject to intense criticism of international human rights organizations as well as the actors within UN. The main objective of this study is to show how this tragic event of the modern history has contributed to the development of international humanitarian law in the way of empowering human rights in the face of states? crimes.
