Abstract (EN)
Gordon Childe's Man Makes Himself treats the Neolithic and Urban Revolutions as critical turning points in the evolution of prehistoric societies. The Neolithic Revolution was characterised by the discovery of agriculture and sedentarisation, resulting in population growth and social complexity. The Urban Revolution, on the other hand, is characterised by irrigation systems, metallurgy and specialised division of labour, paving the way for the emergence of the first cities. Although Childe explains these processes from a materialist perspective, he has been criticised for not sufficiently emphasising social and cultural factors. Today's archaeological findings reveal that these revolutions were more complex processes with regional variations. While Childe's work provides a valuable framework for prehistoric social development, it should be considered in conjunction with modern interpretations.
