The phenmenon of surveillance in visual art practices

In this study, Surveillance Phenomenon is explained in the context of Visual Arts. First of all, in the study, the historical process of surveillance from the past to the present in the context of power is mentioned. Surveillance means care and protection and this definition emerges in the context of the monitor/monitored relationship of control, supervision, and observation. John Berger emphasizes that seeing comes before speaking and this is how children learn. In this study, which also covers modern surveillance, this type of surveillance emerged with the development of capitalism and increased the control of capital over the labor force by keeping workers under control in factories. It has been a tool of economic and social control. In the second part, the concept of panopticon, the first element of surveillance, is explained. The meaning of the Panopticon is in fact surveillance of the whole and this understanding of surveillance is a kind of a prison model. The content of this concept, the Synopticon and Omniopticon, also emphasizes today's surveillance and is explained in detail in the research. In the third section, examples of artists who give place to the phenomenon of surveillance in visual arts are given. Last but not least, the last chapter, the fourth chapter, consists of the researcher's studies on the concept of Surveillance in Visual Arts.
