Abstract (EN)
Concepts such as "surveillance", "control" and "controlling" have a history as old as humanity and surveillance practices have functioned as a mechanism of social control throughout history. Functionally, the perception of surveillance has evolved to different dimensions through certain phases. The factors affecting these phases are attributed to the social, economic, political and cultural developments of societies. These developments in societies also bring about change and transformation. With these changes and transformations, the perception of surveillance has started to manifest itself in different ways. First of all, the Panopticon design put forward by Jeremy Bentham, which was transformed into a metaphor to ensure social control, draws attention. This design is the spatial reflection of institutionalized surveillance. With the changing and transforming social structure, the Panopticon design has been replaced by spatial surveillance. The biggest factor in the removal of spatial boundaries has been the developing technology. Thanks to information and information technologies, surveillance activities that cross borders have emerged. In the modern period, being under surveillance was a deniable situation for individuals; with the postmodern period, surveillance has become voluntary. The understanding of voluntary surveillance reveals that the understanding of privacy has also changed in people. In this thesis, the theoretical structure of the surveillance factor is first analyzed. In the second chapter, the phases of surveillance are discussed in a broad historical process, and in the last stage, the transformation of the phenomenon of privacy with surveillance and social networks is tried to be emphasized.
