A new field in graphic design: Information design and a project

Information has given power to the ones who carry it throughout the history. Information which was used to be limited and accessable only for distinguished people, is now in the hands of human beings thanks to the technological developments. However, rapidly growing information mass creating a massive information bombardment effect has started to be a handicap for people in choosing the right information they need.At this point, a design branch steps in, with an aim to deliver people the right and most effective information through the extraction of raw data and transforming it into a easily perceivable form: Information design.In this thesis titled ?A New Field in Graphic Design: Information Design and An Application?, this not well-known branch in the world ?and almost unheard of in Turkey, is examined from a detailed perspective. Following various definitions of information design, a detailed emphasis is given to the historical development of Information design along with the analyses of examples. In the light of its historical development, information design is positioned according to the other design branches; their common and differing points are examined through examples. Applied field of information design have been studied in detail, in order to bring a comprehensive understanding to the area of information design. Projects, leading designers from the area, information design?s present situation are also discussed.The practical part of this project covers the wayfinding and signage design of the Dokuz Eylül University Hospital. Following a comprehensive research among the well known hospitals in the world, a design process is overtured that can be applied to all the information design projects.
