ABSTRACT PROFESSIONAL VALUE SYSTEMS OF TURKISH ARCHITECTS WITH RESPECT TO CLIENTS AND USERS IN CONTEMPORARY RESIDENTIAL DESIGN PRACTICE Burçak Serpil Altay Ph. D. Prof. Dr. Zuhal Ulusoy August, 2000 This study is based on the exploration and understanding of the value systems of architects regarding clients and users during residential design practice. This needs an inquiry of the existing Turkish social context as well as the context of design practice, including various actors. After an introduction to the basic concepts of the study, including knowledge, values, value systems, professions and professionalism; an actor-based framework is proposed to analyse architects' value systems. The architectural profession and it's relationship with other actors is discussed briefly throughout history, including the changing the role of the architect in Turkey with respect to society at large and during distinct residential design processes. Afterwards, a research is carried out with twenty-four practicing architects in Ankara, through open-ended interviews, investigating architects' perpectives and experiences during design practice, their relationship with the actors and the impact of these on their professional conduct. The data analysis is based on the derivation of basic themes forming categories followed by the discovery of emergent relationships between these themes. The value systems of architects during residential design practice is presented in a model comprised of an interrelated set of corresponding and conflicting beliefs regarding the architects' values attributed to their professional identities, clients, users and the society at large, their professional aim and objectives, and how these beliefs guide their action and interaction at different stages in the design process. Suggestions are proposed with respect to theory and research development as well as education.
