Abstract (EN)
İn the XIX. Century, the poroblem of spelling and the arguments of simplification ofthe language, which all started after the spread of education in the Otoman Empire, reachedthe point of abandoning Arabic letters under the influence of the modernization movementthat started together with Tanzimat (Adminastrative Reforms of 1839). However, the divinityattributed to arabic letters and the concern for being devoid of cultural accumulation of thepast prevented this radical transformation. This courageous transformation was realized onlyby Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.On November 3rd, 1928, the arguments of the alphabet, wich continued for almost ahundred year, were ended in Türkiye, and after the acceptance of Latin letters theimplementations were started immediately. Türkiye, which had gone through a nationalindependence war against imperialism, had experienced a serious transformation into being anation state two centuries after the Western world. This transformation is an original processand it was realized by fighting against the West and taking the West as an example. On oneside a political structuring was applied and on the other side a modern society was tried to becreated with the modifications realized step by step after each other in compliance with acarefully prepared order.Through Nation Schools that are opened following the revolution of letters, literacymovement was started in the whole country; thousands of people were provided with literacyand the awareness of being a citizen. Books were published by the state in order to educatethe people who were learning to read and write at Nation Schools, and a new journal underthe title ? Halk? was published. The efforts of Kemalist ideology in order to transform thesociety were reflected completely in this journal together with the social and politicalstructure of the period and the Republic?s approach to issues such as education, health, women, religion and economy. With the new alphabet and its basic spelling rules and structure that is appropriate forTurkish, which was easier to learn, the literacy rate which was about 10-20 % demonstrateda rapid increase in the first five years. Likewise, the number of the books published reachedthe total number achieved by Ottomans through the centuries, just in twenty years. As a result of all these efforts, Turkish acquired its own identity and a national quality. The new Turkish alphabet, by providing the spread of the education, demonstrated that it is atool which facilitates the process of modernization.
