Abstract (EN)

The innovation efforts that started with the Tanzimat gained a new momentum with the Turkish revolution in line with the goal of modernization and rising above the level of contemporary civilizations. The issue of the translation of classics in our literature began to be discussed after the Tanzimat in the context of westernization and modernization. It is seen that the discussions were concentrated in the definition of a classics which needed to be translated, whether we had classical works or a classical period, and if the translations to be made will cause cultural change or not. Under the leadership of Hasan Âli Yücel who was the Minister of Education, translation was taken seriously by the goverment, and a series of studies which were carried out by Yücel in the field of education and culture aimed at rooting the Turkish revolution. As a result of the work of the Translation Committe formed within the framework of the principles determined at the First Turkish Publications Congress and the Translation Bureau, which was established as a result of the meetings of the delegation, the translations were carried out in earnest, while the translations and plans were announced with the official publication of the Translation Bureau, the Translation Journal. It can be thought that the Bureau, which determined the classics required to be read by the "new human" needed for the realization of the Turkish Enlightenment, would also affect the formation of the literary canon with the choices it made. In addition, the fact that the translations were selected among the works that reflect the spirit of humanism, which supports the Turkish revolution and presented as the philosophy of the cultural reforms, created the need to examine the ideology in the context of its relationship with art and literature.
