11 EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF PITTING DISPERSION ON HELICAL GEARS (M.Sc. Thesis) Burak BAŞARAN GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY June 2001 ABSTRACT Pitting, a frequently observed failure mode of surface fatigue on gears is still keeping its generating mechanism as a secret. In order to reveal the effects of profile correction factor and helix angle on helical gear surface fatigue, a project supported by Research Projects Foundation of Gazi University has been carried out. A closed circuit power circulating gear fatigue test rig and some special helical gears were manufactured. Keeping the material, lubricant and surface texture parameters constant, and having gears with different profile correction factors and helix angles provided altered Hertzian contact pressures. The change of rate of pitting damage due to the change of Hertzian pressures were determined. Depending upon the analytical calculations and the results of experiments together, the effects of investigated parameters on pitting of helical gears are presented.
