Abstract (EN)
This study has been carried out as a descriptive study in order to determine the effect of shift work on the sleep quality and state of mind of the nurses. Sampling of the study is composed of 172 nurses who work in private hospitals and university hospitals in İzmir between October 2014 and February 2015, accepting to participate in the study and completely filling the forms and measurements used in the study. Individual Information Form, Pittsburgh Index of Sleep Quality and SCL-90-R Scanning Test of Psychological Signs have been used in data collection. 62,8 % of the nurses who are included in the study work in university hospitals while 37,2 % of them work in private hospitals. It has been determined that 49,4 % of the nurses participating in the study work in surgery units, 33,1 % of them have been working work between 2 and 10 years, 48.8 % of them work constantly in day shift while 51,2 % of them work in shifts. In accordance with the answers given at the end of the surveys applied in the study, Pitssburg Index of Sleep Quality and SCL-90-R sub-dimensions have statistically been correlated ( p< 0,05). When the sub-dimensions of Pittsburg sleep quality are considered, the relationship among the sub-dimensions of subjective sleep quality, sleep latency (the duration of dropping off), sleep efficiency, sleep disorder, day function and the shift has been found substantial (p<0.05) while there has been determined no substantiality among the sub-dimensions of sleep duration, sleeping pills usage and the shift (p>0.05). When sub-dimension average scores of the urses are analyzed, it has been observed that the most common psychological signs of the nurses are obsesive - compulsive (1,23), somatisation (1,02), anxiety (1,11), phobis anxiety (1,01) disorders. Moreover; it has been found that the nurses working in shifts have a worse sleep quality and their all psychological disorder signs, except for psychoticism, are above the psychopathological limit. As a conclusion, it has been determined that shift work has a negative effect on sleep quality and the state of mind. Keywords: shift, nurse, sleep quality, psychological disorder
