Abstract (EN)
This study aimed to determine hepcidin levels in hemodialysis patients and to evaluate the relationship between the renal failure level and inflammation status. The study was conducted as a prospective case-control, comparative study on 90 participants admitted to Baghdad Teaching Hospital/Medical City in Iraq. The first group (control group) consisting of 40 healthy participants between the ages of 32-65, and the second group consisted of patients in the CKD group consisting of 50 patients. In patients with chronic kidney disease, hepcidin levels rise as kidney function declines, and they eventually enter the final stage of kidney disease. Hepcidin levels in the kidneys can reach very high levels. Hepcidin, the main regulator of systemic iron homeostasis, plays a role in inflammatory anemia. Hepcidin levels were significantly higher in individuals with CKD compared to the control group, and it was observed that they increased as the disease progressed. Kidneys are responsible for hepcidin secretion. Its high level reduces renal filtration and reduces kidney function, and when the kidneys are damaged, its elimination is restricted, resulting in elevated serum levels.
