SUMMARY Master Thesis AUTOMATION AND CONTROL OF PENSTOCK INTAKE GATES IN HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANTS USING PLC SYSTEM Hüseyin Nazmi DOGAN Firat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Electrical Education 2O05, Page: 64 Penstock intake Gates in dams are used for controlling flow of water which provides energy for the rotation of generator turbines. Until recent years, this process was being realized by manual systems. This can cause some faults because of wrong usage by operators. Today, this process can be realized automatically, rapidly and reliable with the development of digital control systems. In this work, the convenient PLC for this work has been chosen. Then a PLC program and required circuits has been developed. Finally a penstock intake gate model has been simulated and realized. With the usage of this, PLC control system, more productive operation can be achieved in hydroelectric power plants which supply important part of the generated energy. This work can be a model for further works for hydroele ctric power plants. Keywords: Penstock, PLC, Power Plant XI
