Abstract (EN)

11 ABSTRACT Master of Science Thesis INFRARED SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY OF HOFMANN-DANON- TYPE CLATHRATES M(l,9-diaminononane)Ni(CN)4.G; (M = Ni or Cd; G = naphthalene, benzene, anthracene, phenanthrene) M. TURKA Y AYTEKIN Anadolu University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Physics Department Supervisor : AssocProf. Mustafa ŞENYEL 1999, Page 83 In this study Hofmann-danon-type clathrates formulated in M(l,9- diaminononane)Ni(CN)4.G (M=Ni, Cd; G=naphthalene, benzene, anthracene, phenanthrene) are obtained chemically. Infared spectra of the clathrates are recorded with FT-IR spectrometer in the spectroscopic region of 4000 cm"1 - 400 cm"1. We also determined the number of guest molecules in these clathrates structures by spectral analysis. By making comparison and analogy with free diaminononane molecule and the clathrates of this molecule, vibrational frequencies and modes are determined. Frequency shifts in some vibrational modes due to clathrates formation in comparison to the free molecule are observed. It was found out that these shifts were appeared due to bounding metal, metal ligand vibrational modes and coupling. By analyzing the spectra, it has been determined that the clathrates are formed in the polymeric I M-Ni(CN)4 1 x sheets. Ligand molecules are present below and above these sheets. In these structures, nickel atoms are bounded by the four C atoms of CN molecule whereas the metal atoms are surrounded both by the four N atoms of CN molecule and by the two N atoms of ligand molecule. The guest molecules can be accommodated in the cavities between the sheets. Key Words: Hofmann-danon-type clathrates, 1,9-diaminononane, guest molecule, vibrational frequencies, FT-IR spectrometer.
