Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT Master of Science Thesis STUDY OF HOFMANN-PN-TYPE HOST-AROMATIC GUEST SYSTEMS INTHERED-UNDER SPECTROSCOPIC REGION NECLA ÇAKMAK Anadolu University Graduate School of Sciences Physics Department Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Mustafa ŞENYEL 2004, 83 pages In this thesis, Hofmann-pn-type host-aromatic guest systems which are represented by M(propylenediamine)Ni(CN)4.1/2G (M= Ni; G = Benzene, 1,2-, 1,3-dichlorobenzene) formula are obtained by means of chemical ways. Infrared spectra of host-aromatic guest systems in range 4000 cm'1 - 400 cm'1 were determined by FT-IR spectrometer. A number of guest molecues which are in Ni-pn-Ni-G layer structrure were determined by making elemental analysis of clathrates. Vibrational frequencies and modes were determined by compering vibrational frequencies of the free propylenediamine molecules and host-aromatic guest system which contain these molecules. It was observed that some of these vibrational frequencies shifted in terms of a free molecule due to formation of clathrate. It was determined that frequency shifts observed in terms of the free molecule were appeared due to bounding metal, metal ligand vibrational modes and coupling. It was observed that clathrates consisted of |M-Ni(CN)4|? polymeric layers by analyzing spectra. Ligand molecules present below and above these layers. In these structures, nickel atoms are surrounded by four C atoms of CN molecules in a square-planar layer, and the metal atoms are bound to four N atoms of CN ions and the two N atoms of ligand molecule. The guest molecules can be accommodated in the cavities between layers. Keywords: Hofmann-pn-Type Clathrates, Infrared Spectra, Propylenediamine, Benzene and Derivates, Clathrates u
