Some significant personalities of the first Crusade campaign

Abstract (EN)

The Byzantine Empire, which was desperate against the intense Turkish invasions of the tenth century, demanded help from Europe. The Pope, who responded to this request for help in his own interest, sent large armies to Anatolia. In November of the year 1095 at the Council of Clermont the Pope mentioned the wealth of the East and of the torture committed by the Turks against the Christians. The Pope, who also sought to overcome the troubles in Europe, played a major role in the acceptance of the Crusade by a very large crowd. As a result of this call, the nobles who couldn't see a future in Europe joined the campaign with the dream of the land they would conquer in the east. In this research, social, political and economic situation of Europe at that time was emphasized. In addition, İt was tried to determine the conditions under which the participants participated to campaign. The nobles from different parts of Europe struggled with each other during the campaign and experienced great troubles in this land Anatolia and the Near East, Where they had never been before, however they successfully formed four states in Anatolia and the Near East. Bohemond, Tankred, I.Baudouin and Godefroi who were Among the leading figures of the Crusade, achieved their goals, but Raymond did not. This study is based on the leading figures of, the 1st Crusade campaign, their motivations, their attitude during the campaign, their realitions with each other and the Muslims the encountered. Furthermore, the Crusaders interacted with the inhabitants of the land that they invaded, through warfare, and they made them their subjects time to time. The nobles' participation to the campaign was considered a key point, and ensured the longevity of the Crusader presence in the region. In the last part of the study, the European nobles, who became a part of the campaign enthusiastically, were compared in terms of their personalities and legacies.
