Investigation of the presence of pathogenic bacteria in urinary tract infections and their antibiotic susceptibilities

Abstract (EN)

Urinary Tract Infections have attracted much attention since they are among the most common causes of nosocomially-acquired infections and require medical treatment. There is antibiotic resistance to most antibacterials which are used in the treatment of the disease. In this study, we aimed to determine the microorganisms that cause UTI and their antibiotic resistance rates in Muğla/Marmaris region. In this study, 340 urine specimen culture results, collected from patients in outpatient clinics who applied with various complaints and referred to the laboratory with preliminary diagnosis of urinary tract infections between September 2015 and December 2015, were evaluated. Antibiotic susceptibilities of 134 isolated bacteria were investigated. The most common bacteria was Escherichia coli (61.19%). When antibiotic susceptibilities were examined, E. coli was resistant to ampicillin-sulbactam (63%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (59%), ciprofloxacin (48%), ceftiriaxone (34%), Gentamycine (28%), Piperacillin/Tazobactam (24%) and Imipenem (6%). Regional antibiotic resistance patterns are important in treatment. It is important to investigate antibiotic resistance patterns periodically in our region. These results will be very instructive for the relevant clinicians about therapy specially for doctors in our region.
