Abstract (EN)

The regeneration of lost periodontal supporting tissues at a predictable level is main goal of periodontal therapy. Periodontal ligament cells are the only cell type that have a potential for maintaining the healty connection between the teeth and alveolar bone. Guided tissue regeneration is a process that allows the periodontal ligament and bone cells to selectively repopulate of previously diseased root surface by means of non-resorbable and resorbable membranes. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of absorbable collagen membrane on the inhibition of downgrowth of gingival epitelium and the support of regenerative capability of periodontal ligament cells. For this purpose, two-wall intrabony defects were surgically created in mandibular teeth in 9 dogs. In randomly chosen quadrant in each dog, 20x30 mm. collagen membrane was shaped to cover the interproximal bone defect and adjacent root surface. No collagen membrane was placed over the debrided control defects. The block biopsy was applied 7, 15, 21, 30, 60, 90 days after the surgical procedures. Histomorphologic and histometric evaluations were performed. Although gingival recession was observed at some of the sites, both collagen membrane treated and control defects exhibited various amounts of new attachment.
