In this study, it was aimed to explore whether there is a role or effect of parents on the fifth grade students in the primary school during development of their reading habits and the determine the level of mis impact if it existed. The population of the study was chosen among schools of the Ministery of Education in the centre of Kastamonu. The sample consisted of fifth grade students who were collected from four different primary schools. A questionnaire filled by a researcher was used as a tool for collection of the data as opinion of the students. The questionnaire had 3 parts. The first part included personal qualification. Second part, consisted of 22 items directing children towards reading, has been used. It covered the activities of the students that were affected by their mother and father. The answers were graded utilizing to the three Likert Type Scale. In the third part, there were 19 open-ended questions to measure the reading habit of the students. The results of the analyzed data and the methods of statistics were as follows: Five independent variables were placed in the first part of the questionnaire about personal information of the fifth grade students. These were: 1. The education level of the students' mother' 2. The education level of their father' 3. The occupation of their mother, 4. The job of their father, 5. Some questions regarding their economic situations and also some choices which were developed for these questions. Findings were listed in an order, according to the order of independant variable's in the questionnaire. Besides, findings were interpreted as a power of percentage and frequency. The findings, regarding the habits of five grade students, were generated by the answers of the questions about reading habits' questions. They were analysed by assessing the percentage and frequency of the results. The findings, regarding guidance of the parents to their children, were formed by the students' answers. Their answers were in the questionnaire.IV The collected answers were analysed after adding points of each individual and assessment was based on percentage and frequency. According to the results of this analyze, the avarage would increase when the her mother listen to her children's reading and when she shares their reading parts with her children. Besides, the opinion of the father would increase the average if shared will the child. It was observed that if fathers suggest their children to read the brochure in the letter boxes, the average decreased. Forcing the chidren for going to the libraries and borrowing books were the factors that decreased the average. According to the results of the total average, most of the families can not direct their children towards a good reading habbit but it was found out that the opinions of the students' about these directions, were positive. During measurement of the parental tendency towards the reading habbit of their children, points were collected for each student and ANOVA and t-test were used to reveal whether these points were changing according to independant variables. In order to find out the differences in the education level between the groups, Tukey-HSD was utilized. According to these results, if the parents' economic situation of the parents, their education level and the type of father's job is high, efforts of the parents on their children's reading habit are increasing. In order to explore the relationship between the same question items which measure the students' reading habits and independant variables, Chi-Square Test was used. It was found that there is a relationship between the father's job and the number of books read by the children. Iti was also observed that there was a statistically significant difference between economic situation of the parents and the number of children's book, between the education level of both parents and the childrens' aim for goig to thelibraries between the father and mother's level of education and the childrens' frequency of watching television, between the economic level of parents and the childrens' situation of having bookshelves.
