Abstract (EN)

This study is conducted to investigate whether life attitudes and cognitive distortions of individuals who attempted suicide had a predictive influence on coping methods. Patients admitted to Dr. Gaziantep Ersin Arslan Training and Research Hospital and Gaziantep University Şahinbey Research Application Hospital due to suicide attempt are formed the universe of research and 100 patients who meet the research criteria as sample of the study. Data is collected with 'Personal Data Form (PDF)', 'The Life Attitudes Scale (LAS)', 'The Cognitive Distortions Scale (CDS)', 'Stress Coping Styles Scale (SCSS)'. Percentage, arithmetic mean and standard deviation, correlation and regression analysis are performed in the evaluation of the data. The mean of LAS and CDS points of patients are determined as 87.50±22.70 and 106.81±14.54 respectively. Patients have used the desperate and submissive approach coping strategy which is the sub-dimension of SCSS mostly. Cognitive distortions and life attitudes of patients are determined as significant predictors of coping strategies (p˂0.001, p˂0.05). As a result, it is determined that patients who attempt suicide use very high levels of cognitive distortions, apply the desperate approach and the submissive approach which are ineffective coping with stress method more and their life attitudes are negative. It is determined that cognitive distortions and life attitudes used by the patients have a significant impact on their strategies for coping with stress. Offering psychotherapeutic services will contribute in order to improve effective coping strategies for the treatment of patients, reduce cognitive distortions and develop positive attitude towards life.
