Investigating professional self-discrepancies of psychotherapists: The role of personal psychotherapy

The purpose of the current study was to investigate psychotherapists' self-discrepancies in terms of their profession and personal psychotherapy experiences of them. It was also aimed to explore the potential relationship between these concepts. For this purpose, qualitative research was carried out. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with 17 psychotherapists, 11 of whom had personal psychotherapy experience. The collected data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Four main themes were identified, namely psychotherapist in the other chair, the frame, portrait of the psychotherapist, and fitting game. A total of 12 subthemes were identified.
