Abstract (EN)
The objective of the investigation reported in this thesis was to experimentally study the gas-liquid two-phase flow regimes, to measure void fraction (or liquid hold-up) and pressure drop in horizontal tubes with eccentrically inserted rods. Initially, two horizontal circular transparent pipes with different diameters have been tested to become familiar with the experimental procedure, comparing the results obtained from our measurements with the data given in the literature. Afterwards, two-phase co-current flow in an upwardly inclined pipe has been investigated. This pipe which was mounted on an adjustable metal bridge was one of the circular transparent pipes used for the horizontal experiments. The flow regimes in two-phase flow depend on many different parameters, such as pipe angle, flow direction, fluid properties, pressure, heat flux, mass flow rates, and channel geometry. In designing industrial equipments, the tubes, gaps, bundles, separators, and junctions could be used depending on the requirements of the process. Investigations on the gas liquid flows have been mostly focused on the regular geometries for a long time. It is clearly expressed that, the channel settlement could be not only vertical, horizontal, or inclined, but also different combinations of them. The usage of irregular channel geometries is the another complexity of gas liquid flows in compact devices. This study is an approach to the more complex channel geometries. In this study, gas-liquid flows in horizontal eccentric pipes have been examined to fill up the deficiency in the literature. Slug flows have been investigated in a detailed manner using both measurement devices and camera. Therefore, differences between eccentric and circular pipe flow parameters have been examined. Particularly, variations of flow regimes with respect to gas, liquid flow rates, diameters and eccentricity of two pipes have been determined. The results of this investigation will shed light on the developments of new equipment. Keywords: Two-phase flow; Pressure drop; Void fraction; Slug flow; Flow regimes.
