The executive and legislative powers of the president of the region in Iraq Kurdistan regional government

Today, the autonomous region known as Iraq Kurdistan Regional Government refers to the area where the Kurds live densely in the Republic of Iraq-founded in 1921. The Kurds, one of the indigenous peoples in the Middle East, have maintained their ethnic identity by preserving their language, culture, and historical roots and by differentiating themselves from the other minority groupsformingthe state of Iraq. This differentiation sometimeseven gave rise to declare independence from the state. It seems that, starting from the establishment of Iraq, almost a hundred year old Kurdish struggle for autonomy and legal status now paved the way for a legal framework. However, the political and constitutional problems faced by the Iraqi State on the one hand, and the clamors of Kurds after the referendum for independence on the other, show that the dispute on the status of the Kurds in Iraq is not over yet. It is important to understand the legal status and the governing structure of the Iraqi Kurdistan in order to understand these debates and to anticipate the future developments in the region. In the light of these, the first aim of this thesis is to analyze the processes and developments related to the self-government of Iraqi Kurds, once being a federated structure within the Federal Republic of Iraq and now being Kurdistan Regional Government .The main aim of this proposal is to analyze the key features of the governing system emerging upon these historical developments and the executive and legislative powers of the President of the Region.
