Abstract (EN)
Gated communities which have been started to be built in the post 1990 era in Istanbul can be seen as a sign of an important transformation in city planning, city management and urban classes. These housing areas are separated from their entourage, thanks to doors and barriers, their entrance is surveyed all the time, they differentiate from urban life in terms of physical and socio-economical patterns, and their access is based on the ownership of a car. This research is going to be concentrated on why people living in a metropolis which is transformed by modernity and capitalism, are choosing to hide behind walls in their housing areas. Within the research, gated communities? occurrence period is studied, built examples are investigated, the similar properties of this housing areas and the reasons for choosing this kind of life is analyzed on both through users and investors. Also the position of architects and architecture at today?s city planning and in the formation of gated communities is considered.
