Urban intervention in istanbul: Lütfi Kırdar period (1938-1949)

In this thesis, urban intervention in Istanbul during the period of Lütfi Kırdar, who served as a governor and mayor from 1938 to 1949, will be examined. The intervention in the city also directly affect human life. For this reason, different areas affected by the urban intervention will be also included in the context of the thesis. In the study, urban intervention in public space and urban intervention in other areas such as production and trade centres, housing and health are discussed. In order to determine the intervention, documentary analysis method within the scope of qualitative research was used. Within the framework of the documentary analysis, the newspapers Cumhuriyet and Son Posta, which had high circulation and had two different political views during the single-party era, were examined. A great majority of the urban intervention during that period were implemented in public space. Therefore, in the first chapter of the study, the demarcation of the public space and the reflection of the Republican modernization on public space are addressed. The next chapter is concerned with the biography of Lütfi Kırdar to better understand and give the meaning to his attitude in the intervention in Istanbul. In the final chapter, the data obtained from the newspaper scans and municipal reports of that period will be used to explain the urban intervention. As a result of the findings, in Kırdar period, it is observed that the majority of the intervention in the city were implemented in the public space. Furthermore, the intervention for public space at that period is aimed at creating a modern society.
