Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Rare Books Library, detection and protection suggestions of 19th century maps

The Deteriorations in map works which can be defined as "Portable Cultural Assets" found in the Rare Works Library of İstanbul University Faculty of Letters were determined and protection methods were proposed in the light of the findings obtained after these disturbances were analyzed. İn addition, the purpose of the study is to evaluate the degree of deteriorations found in the maps. According to the assessment, maps that require urgent intervention and which are poor status are determined. For this purpose, firstly, a historical study was made on 207 maps found in the Rare Work Library. İn the study, the number, date of publication, date of registration, dimensions, type of use, name and scale of the map are taken part. İn addition to documenting the maps with pictures, according to the purpose of this study it is also to provide to present the table created as a reference catalogue in the library. After all the data were collected, a data file was created about the causes, processes, results and general conditions of the degradation in these 207 maps in the Rare Works Library of Istanbul University. The general condition of the maps was classified as good, bad and medium. Maps that care the most urgent and repair needs to be done are those in bad condition. It was determined that the distortions in the maps were caused by mechanical, chemical, physical and photo chemical reasons. The results obtained from the data also show that the most distortions are caused by incorrect storage.In this respect, it is thought that protection measures will be increased by taking remedial measures for incorrect storage conditions among other reasons.
