Research of historical environmental fabric around Mithatpaşa Street of İzmir

In this study, the development and change factors of Mithatpasa street, where plays an important role in, are researched from 19th century till to the present time. The development of street shows great similarity with the one Izmir city has. The fact that Izmir is on the intersection point of east and west trade highways has increased the importance of the city. By the traders from east and west immigrating to the city and so the combination of their cultures, it is seen that the social structure of the city is being affected. Additionally, the increase in the trade facilities and the climate is being warm for the whole year has also increased the interest to the city. Finally, depending on these factors, city has begun to enlarge and rapidly change in the west axle. In the scope of the study, the change in Mithatpasa Street is tried to be defined by performing literature and archive studies and investigating the development plans. The effects of made development laws on the street axle and the practices to protect the unique structures on the street in the process of change are surveyed then the results derived from their deterioration are tried to be drawn. In the first section, in the scope of the article, a general evaluation about the street is made, then general characteristics and the historical development is made in second part while the change of the roads and the structures of the historical street under environmental and social affects. The decisions and practices regarding the structures are evaluated by researching the way of realizing the preservation practices on the street fabric and researching the documents of the decisions taken by the preservation laws and practicers. The place and importance of the street in Izmir and the architectural development and social change of the street in the city fabric is investigated. The evaluation the preservation practices made during the researches are studied in the fourth chapter and some advices are tried to put forward. The general evaluation of the works on the street and the results drawn are dealt with in the fifth section.
