Part renewal operations on jet engines

Prof. Dr. A. Akile TANATMIŞ 2001, 145 pages In this thesis advanced part renewal operations applied to jet engines are considered. Renewal operations are divided into three main groups. In the first group welding and brazing operations applied to the jet engines are considered. Oxyacetylene welding of gas welding techniques; gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, shielded metal arc welding and plasma arc welding of arc welding techniques; electron beam welding and laser beam welding of beam welding techniques are studied, advantages and disadvantages are stated and examples of applications are given. In the second group, electrochemical machining, electrochemical grinding, electro discharge machining and laser machining of advanced methods of machining are studied, advantages and disadvantages are stated and examples of applications are given. In the third group protective coatings are considered, diffusion coatings, MCrAlY overlays, metallic-ceramic coatings, thermal barrier coatings and thermal spray coatings are studied and examples of applications are given. In addition, in this thesis; auxiliary operations other than these advanced renewal operations, such as cleaning, blasting, shot peening, painting and heat treatments are briefly introduced. Some examples of part renewal operations applied by Eskişehir lsl Air Support and Maintenance Center to F110-GE-100/129 turbofan engines which powers F-16 fighter of Turkish Air Force are given. In conclusions, besides the advantages and disadvantages of parts renewal operations, some examples to benefits of renewing the components expired life limits and reusing the component instead of replacing are interpreted and the results are offered.
