Investigation of the protective effect of kaempferol against to muscle and lung tissue damages due to lower extremity ischemia reperfusion

Abstract (EN)

In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the protective antioxidant activities of kaempferol in preventing muscle and lung tissue damage due to transient ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury, which can cause serious morbidity and mortality in the lower extremities. In our study, 24 Wistar rats weighing 250-300 grams, 7-8 weeks old, were used. Animals were randomly divided into 4 groups as Control group, I/R group, Kaempferol (K) group and I/R+Kaempferol group. At the end of the application, the tissues were taken and the measurements of MDA, fatty acid amounts, and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and Catalase enzyme activities were made. Although the MDA level, which is a marker of lipid peroxidation level in muscle tissue, increased significantly in the IR group compared to the control group (p<0.01), a significant decrease was observed in the IR+K and K groups (p<0.001). SOD enzyme activity was significantly decreased in the IR group compared to the control, while a significant increase was observed in the IR+K and Kaempferol groups. When we compared the catalase enzyme activity with the control, it was determined that although it decreased significantly in the IR and IR+K groups, it increased in the Kaempferol group with an opposite trend (p<0.001). Although the MDA level in the lung tissue did not differ in the IR+C and C groups compared to the control group (p>0.05), it was found to be partially increased in the IR group (p<0.05). While the amount of SOD decreased significantly in the IR group (p<0.001), it was found to be partially increased in the IR+C and C groups. While it was observed that the catalase level decreased partially in the IR and IR+C groups compared to the control group (p<0.05), there was a very significant increase in the C group (p<0.001). At the end of the study, it was observed that intraperitoneally administered kaempferol was effective in eliminating the partial damages of MDA and SOD and antioxidant enzymes such as catalase after Ischemia/Reperfusion.
