Investigation of the use of the limestone quary waste as aggregate source in Karaburun

Abstract (EN)

In this study, wastes of the Uygar Marble limestone quarry working in the Gerence Formation in the Balıklıova Region of Karaburun Peninsula has been investigated to determine if it can be used as an aggregate source.For this purposes, cylindirical samples are prepared from the block samples by drilling and uniaxial compressive strength, unit weight, porosity, void ratio and water absorption tests were carried out on these samples.Additional to there tests, Aggregates are produced from the cored blocks by crushing them in the laboratary to carry out laboratory test on them.. The aggregates are sieved and groupped according to their grain sizes. Grain size distribution, grain density, water absorption ratio, void volume, specific gravity, methylen blue, aggregate corrosion strenght, aggregate disintegration strength, frosted-defrosted strenghts, magnesium sülfate value, aggregate impact value, aggregate crushing value, loose bulk density, aggregate particle shape, flatness index and lenghtiness index tests are made on the aggregate samples. These tests are made according to the methods given in the Turkish standards.Main elements and percentage of oxides are determined with chemical analysis. X-ray diffraction analysis is made to support the results of chemical analysis.The useage potential of the Karaburun Uygar Marble limestone quarry wastes as aggregate, which is the main aim of the study is examined by comparing the experimental results with the TSE and BS given limit values. The experimental results show that Karaburun limestone belonging to the Gerence Formation quarried at the Uygar marble quarry are suitable for use as an aggregate source.
