The evaluation of the satisfaction and success level of the basic life support, advanced cardiac life support and trauma courses given to sixth class medical students at the emergency medicine internship

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the success and satisfaction level of basic life support, advanced cardiac life support and advanced trauma life support training given to 6th grade medical students during their emergency internship. Materials and methods: The universe of this descriptive and retrospective study consisted of 6th grade students of the Faculty of Medicine, who were in emergency internship rotation at the KTU Faculty of Medicine in 2019-2020. 120 students were included in the study. Questionnaire forms that were prepared in line with the literature and included the socio-demographic characteristics of the students were created. Before and after the training, evaluation tests that measuring the knowledge levels of the students were conducted. In addition, satisfaction surveys were conducted to evaluate the satisfaction of the students after the training. The data obtained from the study were analyzed in computer environment using IBM SPSS 23 package program. Results: Out of 120 students participating in the research; The mean scores of the pre-test (60.44±11.84) and post-test scores (87.93±10.57) of those receiving basic and advanced cardiac life support training and there was a statistically significant difference between them (p<0,05). Similarly, there was a statistically significant difference between the pre-test mean score (62.35±13.73) and post-test mean score (78.41±9.38) of the individuals who received trauma education (p<0.05). Contrary to what was predicted, no statistically significant difference was found between those who received basic and advanced cardiac life support training and those who did not (p>0.05). Likewise, there was no statistical difference between those who aimed to specialize in the emergency and those who did not (p>0.05). The pre-test mean score in advanced trauma life support training of those who were satisfied with studying at the Faculty of Medicine was higher than those who were not satisfied (p<0,05). In all trainings, the satisfaction levels of the participants were generally high. Conclusion: Basic, advanced cardiac and advanced trauma life support are among the most serious and important medical interventions. There are many studies in the literature reporting healthcare professionals lack knowledge and skills on these issues. In our study, it was observed that these simulation-based trainings significantly increased the knowledge and skills of undergraduate medical school students and positively affected their satisfaction.
