Effects of carvacrol, thymol, ortho- and meta-cresol on isolated rat fundus, ileum ve aorta on the CaCl2 induced contractions

Three different doses of (10-6 , 10- 5 and 10-4)carvacrol and thymol were used and only one (10-4) dose of ortho- and meta-cresols were usedthroughout the investigations.As a result of our experiments carvacrol and thymol were observed to inhibit CaCl2induced contractions of gastric, carvacrol being the most potent of the test substances. Due to lackof any action of carvacrol on the vessels it was suggested that there is no interaction of carvacrolon the L-type calcium channels. Inhibitory action of thymol was lowest on fundus and equipotenton aorta and on ileum. Orto- and meta-cresol inhibited contractions on aorta but only meta-cresolwas inactive on ileum. Due to the relationship between pharmacological activites and molecularstructural properties of the test substances, presence of a direct relationship between isopropylgroup and pharmacological actions on fundus was suggested. In addition to the role of isopropylgroup, role of meta positioned OH group is important for the observed pharmacological actions.
