Abstract (EN)
This thesis explores the historical development, formal characteristics, and especially the application of the Rumi motif—an element of significant importance in Turkish ornamental arts—with a particular focus on its use in the art of tezhip (Islamic illumination). The study analyzes the status and evolution of the Rumi motif during the Seljuk, Beylik, and Ottoman periods, comparing classical examples with contemporary interpretations. It evaluates the motif's function within composition, its stylization processes and methods, and its pattern characteristics, while interpreting how artists have approached and applied it. The research was conducted using a qualitative method. Literature review, visual analysis, and drawing techniques were employed together. Within this framework, illuminated manuscripts containing Rumi motifs from the Kastamonu Manuscript Library were examined. Visual documentation, technical drawings, and interpretations of these motifs were included in the thesis. The findings reveal that the Rumi motif is not only a decorative and visual element but also holds symbolic meanings in the transmission of traditional arts. It has been used and interpreted in various forms depending on the aesthetic perspectives of different historical periods. In this context, it has been concluded that the Rumi motif constitutes a valuable source both for art education and for the contemporary interpretation of traditional Turkish arts.
