Abstract (EN)

For the transition to hydrogen economy, the challenges of producing hydrogen in a clean and efficient manner, as well as storage, must be resolved. Since solid hydrogen storage materials are lightweight materials containing high amounts of hydrogen by weight, they can store hydrogen safely and can be an alternative way for clean hydrogen production. This thesis focuses on the experimental and numerical investigation of hydrogen production from solid hydrogen storage materials and the economic and environmental evaluations for hydrogen-powered vehicles. In the experimental part of the thesis, firstly, PSSA stabilized PdAg catalyst was synthesized for hydrogen production from morpholine borane, and kinetic studies were carried out. Then, the initial TOF value was calculated, and the reusability of the catalyst was investigated. In the numerical part of the thesis, three-dimensional modeling of batch and continuous reactors that can be used for hydrogen production from solid hydrogen storage materials in Comsol environment is given. In addition, a MATLAB Simulink model of a fuel cell vehicle with two different hydrogen storage, a sodium borohydride-based hydrogen storage system and a compressed gas hydrogen tank, was developed. Finally, fuel cell vehicles with sodium borohydride-based hydrogen storage system and compressed gas tank were examined economically and environmentally using the AFLEET tool and compared with a conventional internal combustion engine vehicle using gasoline as fuel in terms of total cost of ownership and environmental effects.
