Investigating the social adaptation of students with hearingloss in inclusive education

Abstract (EN)

Purpose of the research is to investigate the social adaptation level of students with hearing loss inclusive settings, and which factors have an impact on adaptation level. In line with this purpose mixed methods research desingn was implemented with the sub-design of exploratory sequential. At the first part of the research is studied with form teachers and english teachers who situated hearing loss students in their classroom at primary school, also mathematics teachers and turkish-language teachers at secondary school. After reaching to 75 teachers, is asked filling The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and The Social Skills Rating-Teacher Forms. With the results of first part of research is determinated 20 teacher for second part of study for doing semi-structured interviews. Findings which is acquired from scales and interviews showed that students with hearing loss have adaptation challenges like having problems with peers, conflict with others and being alone. Externalizing problem behaviours by students with hearing loss and having defict in terms of social skills bring about having adaptation challenges of students with hearing loss. This adaptation challenges that is experienced by students with hearing loss end up with feeling out of peer group. Teachers said that students with hearing loss are alone most of time, however, they indicate that their students with hearing loss have at least one close friend.
